This deserves a good roasting.
1.) My package also included a bicycle freewheel, wrapped in it's own bubble wrap... with teeth protruding from punctures of the bubble wrap, and loosely wrapped together beside the FRAGILE plastic, shelf wrapped bag of flour. And while the shelf wrap of the flour didn't puncture, but was merely burst by being handled like a bean bag toy, it's flour (about half the bagged content) was all over the innards of the package, and hemorrhaging from the edges of the taped mailer, and also from the multiple puncture holes made by the teeth of the freewheel gears. This was SPECIAL.
EVEN IF the freewheel ought to have been mailed in a plastic shipping bag, it OUGHT to, under the circumstances have had it's teeth enclosed in a cardboard container. That said, the very handling of the bag, like a football apparently, suggests a reason for the half dozen other customer photographs of BURST open flour bags for this product alone. So, while I have ordered several more bags of flour, I believe this deserves some commentary about being house broken.
When I was an adolescent and some neighbors invited me to watch something on their TV, which, while nothing like big screens of today was still a large color TV, I remember their mother noticed that I kind of flopped onto the sofa. She was aghast, and asked me if I always hurled myself at the furniture like that in my house too. I looked surprised, being all of 12 or 13yrs old, and responded, why yes, not all of it I suppose. I mean, I'd never sit like that on any of my mom's hard maple chairs. But that sofa just begs one to fall into it's arms for a nap. By then my friend's mom was just shaking her head.
The analogy only holds up if someone is capable of understanding that grocery merchandise is, practically all of it, PERISHABLE. Many of the products are actually labeled with EXPIRATION DATES. And while a consumer may or may not avail themselves of that knowledge, a merchant knows the expediency of rotating stock of especially PERISHABLE items. Surely it isn't counter productive to expect fulfillment personnel to be aware of expiration dates?
Of Broken Bags.
2.) As a once novice Amazon shopper, I came for the books, and kept coming back for the variety. The times when a detergent bottle leaked, or a glass bulb broke, or some electronic device was brutalized by shipping have thankfully been comparatively seldom. However, as I was searching out the right brand of flour for my purposes, I looked at page after page, after page, of people asking for refunds of their torn or burst packaged items, and it seemed to me that every one of those total loss items ought to have been placed into an actual grocery bag, the thick ones that we're all obligated to buy at the market, and it should be taped shut with duct tape or better. And every taped bag should have a time/date stamp on the bag identifying that inspector who affirms that the perishable item is NOT OUT OF CODE.
However arbitrary the (SELL BY) date code from the manufacturer, some items which are capable of creating a mess of cross contamination need to be better isolated. After all the histrionics we've endured through the CO-V compliance karn evil, customers should have some reasonable assurance that what's been Amazon sealed inside of that parcel isn't potentially hazardous, even if the fragile inner package has failed during transit.
Ziyad Brothers might want to consider that most of the customer photos of failed packaging, including my un-photographed package, show evidence of having burst their seam from the inside out.
